Artist’s Statement
My artistic journey is an exploration of the beauty in imperfection, a celebration of the mundane moments that define the female existence. Through my medium of ceramic sculpture, I delve into abstract realism, crafting human figures that intentionally omit faces. By doing so, I aim to direct the viewer's attention towards the pose, emotion, and presence of each piece, rather than encouraging immediate connections to known individuals.
Having spent years as a graphic designer in the beauty industry, I found myself immersed in the relentless pursuit of marketable beauty. This experience ignited a desire to reclaim the inherent beauty of simply existing. My artistic evolution reflects a departure from the confines of a beauty-centric industry, seeking instead to amplify the authenticity and diversity of the female form.
Each new piece begins with a dialogue between myself and the clay, where I guide its form to convey specific emotions or poses. The clay, in turn, dictates its own nuances—roundness, softness, cellulite marks, or wrinkles—creating a dynamic collaboration with my chosen medium.
As a member of the feminist art movement, my work is a reflection of the myriad facets of womanhood. I aim to foster connection, particularly with women who resonate with the pieces, finding echoes of their own experiences. The joy and sense of inclusion my art elicits are the very emotions I wish to instill in those who encounter it.
My art challenges conventional notions of perfection, as I embrace the unexpected outcomes and flaws inherent in the creative process. The journey from fear of imperfection to embracing its beauty has been transformative, allowing me to laugh in the face of unexpected kiln results.
Balancing my identity as a marketer with my creative aspirations has been a significant challenge. However, this duality fuels my art, serving as a poignant expression of frustration with the lack of realistic representation of women in fashion and the media.
"Contemplating Mountains," a significant piece in my portfolio, exemplifies the powerful connection art can forge. A seemingly flawed detail that disappointed me turned into a poignant moment when a fellow artist recognized her own scar mirrored in the sculpture.
"She looks like me. And she's beautiful,"
she exclaimed—a sentiment that encapsulates the essence of my artistic pursuit.
In essence, my art is an ode to the inherent artistry of existence, a celebration of the beauty found in every woman and the shared experiences that unite us all.
